I don't scarf, I butt join. The wood is essentially a core for the glass skins, it's really a cored fiberglass boat, not a wood boat. It's just that the core is pretty and does add a degree of stiffness that a foam core wouldn't.

I prefer shorter lengths, they are just much easier to handle once the strips are cut. A 16' long 3/4" wide by 3/16" thick strip feels much like handling wet spaghetti, it's way limber and prone to breakage. A strip half that length is easy to handle. I try to buy a mixture of lengths from say 8" to 12' so the butt joints are easily staggered on the hull. Fence materials is what most of us use, some use 4x4 timbers and cut from there, most use 3/4" western red cedar, it's a pretty common fence and decking material. Just have to sort through the piles of wood to find pieces that leave longer lengths between knots. I leave the roof racks on the SUV when I'm building and rarely pass a lumber yard without going in to see if I can find any suitable wood. Yep, takes some time searching, it's part of the process.
