On a curved deck, the amount of water that'll pool up in a hatch with lowered lips - i.e. flush mounted hatch - will be minimal. The only aerea water will pool is along the low side edges of the hatch. 99% of the fore and aft "lip-aerea", which in this case is curved and thus higher than the sides, will drain along the edge *outside* the hatch gasket. And if the lip is 1/2 inch wide, the deck angle at the sides is 20 degrees and the deck material thickness is 1/6 inch, the edge of the lip will be higher than the deck edge. In addition to that the hatch itself will fill some of the volume that water could pool in, giving the result that when you remove the hatch, the amount of water left in the lip aerea would not be enough to cause it to pour into the hull. (see picture) (Ouch! bad picture quality, but I think it makes the point.)
