According to my memory of the Canadian Coast Guard's advice, blue and white are the worst colours. Invisible in waves. Dayglo orange is the best for bright light, and reflective lime green is the best for dim light or night. Also, the bottom of the boat is most likely to be showing if you're in distress. Even if your're in the water hanging on to your upright kayak, flipping it over when you see a potential ride is a good way to signal distress.

(And if you hate the bright colours, what better place to put them than where they're usually out of sight.)

Having said that, my boat is white with a wood hull. That makes it practically invisible but I just like that scheme so much. Such vanity. I may end up with the ugly hull if develop the confidence to leave sheltered waters, though.
