yup, those little panels (as in the 'rail' or any others, etc)can be as sharp sharp sharp and as long long long as you decide to design them. However, there's nothing intrisically sharp or soft about how an s&g meets the water - it's really a choice issue.

But the beauty of s&g is that you CAN make a sharp edge if you want to. I could easily imagine one yak form that would have a multitude of variations of how the rail is designed - for example in 'surfeit lrm' the 'lr' part refers to a long defined rail - the implication being that there would be a 'mr' and a 'sr'.

the 'sr' or 'short rail' would emerge at the hip and continue sternward, while the whole front portion would be as soft as snow. wt shift to engage and vice versa.

and i guess as with any panelled boat, twist can be used to chamfer out any edge as well.

one of the other simple strategies to play with sharpness, would be to simply glue on some foam and round out - and then successively sharpen to check the reaction. Or as we also build strippers, instead of a rail panel, just stitch in full length of 2" hi by 3/4" cedar at the edge - and then sand out to whatever shape desired - then reglass for longevity.

anyway, boats like the rail hurt just to think about. i might make a model for fun sometime, but i think that's as far as it will go. maybe a fun pc of sculpture to hang in the gallery, heh heh.
