Overlaps in each section, what do you mean? Deck and hull? Or smaller than that?

My boats have a definate angle change at the sheer line so it's easy to hide a dried varnish edge.

Nick's boats are quite round so hiding the varnish edge of deck and hull is tougher.

You can make a kayak rotisserie set-up to varnish deck and hull at the same time if you're
anal enough. I've done this a number of times when I had deadlines to meet.

You certainly could buff out the step or overlap of varinsh without doing the whole boat.
If you don't like the result, you're standing way too close to your boat.

Paddle it for a few months, then try to remember what the problem was.
