That's what I thought. What kind of varnish are you using?

I use unthinned Z-spar Captian's varnish and do not have that problem.

Your varnish should remain liquid, long enough for you to drag a
new wet edge into the older varnish and have them melt together.

It is imperative that you keep your varnish from drying out in the can.
Look at the suggestions I have for this on my varnish technique in the Archives.

Then you can thin your varnish using the high quality red label mineral spirits
meant to be used as a paint thinner as opposed to the blue label mineral spirits
meant as a brush cleaner.
