- I guess bears need to now where dinner is just like anyone else, but I suspect the lights are to show you where they are so you can arrange to be someplace else . . .

- reminds me of cottage vacations some years back. We would haul a garbage bag to the local landfill each time we left. We had some guests stay over and I took them to the landfill to do some bear watching. I must admit I was getting a bit casual by then since the bears usually ignored people.

I walk up to the edge of the shallow pit to toss in the bag, when the largest bear I have ever seen in the wild - hidden by the lip of the pit - stands up on its hind legs and looks DOWN at me. I suspected that was not a good thing to see 20 feet away especially when you are carrying what it no doubt considered was its lunch. Our guests were duly impressed but chose to remain in the minivan with my kids who thought it was hilarious. It's at times like one recalls that one is basically made of food.
