I don't know what it's called, but there is a clear film that car companies put on the body under trunk lids so that anything dragged out of the trunk doesn't scratch the paint. Wife's got it on her new Subaru and it seems nearly indestructible and it's very difficult to tell it's there unless you happen to see an edge.

Might work just as well on a kayak.
