I laid a carbon rub strip on the tail of my baidarka and due to the sharp curve ran into the same pop up problem. I did what Dan did as well as placed clear plastic over the carbon to hold it down. It worked in my case but a rim might not be so accessible for wrapping. Rechecking every so often and a gentle rubbing down or two helped.
