: Everyone knows the best protection against bear attack is to bring along

: a friend who you can outrun.

I did invite a friend I know well that I can easily outrun, the offer was turned down with grimmacing looks of malcontent. Ken Sutherland and I had this discussion while doing the Black Island paddle three years ago. I decided from our discussion that he could probably out-sprint me - I'm a very long distance runner, slow and easy. We both knew at time that the local natives stocked the island with bears for guided hunting trips. There was also an old bear track near our campsite. We both slept well that night but I wonder if Ken kept his running shoes nearby.
