Until earlier this year I used to always have a "bear claw" knife in sheath attached to my pfd.

I was in a race down the Anacostia River and up the Potomac in the District of Columbia late last year. Weather turned nasty and a bunch of canoes abandoned ahead of me so I decided to pull out, feeling super tippy in the mini-Mystery, thinking they'd call for a trailer and we'd get a ride back to the finish. Crazy canoeists decided to do a mega portage across sketchy neighborhoods in SW DC, up the Boat Basin and across the Mall.

Never had a problem walking two to three miles with a kayak on my head and potentially seriously nasty sheathed knife in your nations capital.

If I'd not been dressed like a clown in neoprene booties and hydroskin (not to mention my 18 foot long hat), maybe the cops would've paid more heed.

I think that a knife appropriate to your vocation and surroundings makes sense to law enforcement and they won't give you a hard time.

: Is that why people look at me like that???

: I paddled whitewater for years and we all had a quick release knife on
: our PDFs in case of getting tangled in rope or gear.

: I still carry one on my PDF. I think it's just prudent safety gear, and you
: gotta have
: something to spread peanut butter.
